Minimum Requirements for Graduate Admission
The Department's Graduate Committee initially screens all graduate applications to the department. At least one faculty member who is a prospective major professor for the applicant also must accept the applicant.
Each application should include:
- Three letters of recommendation (on or with our departmental form - requires Adobe Acrobat Reader)
- Two official copies of all college transcripts
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores
- (General) GRE Test Scores - http://www.gre.com
Grades & exam scores:
A grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher (where 4.0 equals an "A") and a copy of your GRE score are needed for acceptance into the graduate program in the Department of Biology. Applicants should plan to take the GRE so those scores can be submitted by December-January for admission the following fall semester, or in May-July for admission for the following spring semester.
Additional steps:
Applicants are encouraged to contact a potential major professor, apply for financial support (teaching and research assistantships, as well as other special programs), and visit the department if possible.
Other criteria:
Additional criteria used to evaluate an application include level of course work, letters of recommendation, the applicant's statement regarding professional objectives, publications, and other evidence of interest and activity in the biological sciences.
