Erica Chao, a Ph.D. student in the Mykles lab, gave birth to Gavin Andrew Tristan Chao (GATC) November 9th! He weighed 7 lbs 10 oz and measured 21.5" long. Erica, husband Kent, and Gavin are doing well.

Assistant Professor Joe von Fischer was awarded a Visiting Research Fellowship from the University of Melbourne, Australia. He will conduct research on the biology of greenhouse gas emissions with colleagues in Melbourne, Creswick and Darwin from November 12 to 25.

Alicia has moved to the Hotchkiss Brain Institute at University of Calgary, where she has accepted a postdoctoral position with Dr. Sarah McFarlane working on zebrafish retinal development.

November 9 - 11 Lorrie Anderson and Steve Stack participated in an NSF site visit at the University of Oklahoma in Norman to evaluate the proposal to finish sequencing tomato chromosomes 1 and 10. This proposal is a collaboration involving Colorado State University, Cornell University, and the University of Oklahoma.

Dr. Shane Kanatous has been selected to receive a 2009 mentoring award from Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine.

Assistant Professor Amy Angert traveled to Santa Barbara in early November to participate in a National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis working group on adaptation and climate change.

Professor Alan Knapp is the lead author on a paper published recently in BioScience: "Consequences of more extreme precipitation regimes for terrestrial ecosystems". This paper is a product of an international working group meeting on climate change held in Denmark in 2006 and includes 14 co-authors from 10 institutions and 4 countries.
