Professors Diana Wall and Shane Kanatous will be sponsoring a public lecture series on Antarctica at the Fort Collins Public Library entitled Antarctic Research and the Colorado Front Range: A Celebration of the International Polar Year .

Ph.D. student Reesa Conrey's research on population biology of burrowing owls on the Pawnee National Grassland recieived additional support from the Colorado Audubon Club's Lois Webster fund (use of two spotting scopes and $1,600 for student helpers).

Professor Gregory Florant will be presenting a seminar on his hibernation research to the Biology Department at Williams College in Williamstown, MA on February 9th, 2007.

Professor Mike Antolin heads to Lexington, KY, on Feb 12-14 to present a seminar on plague ecology and evolution, "Plague persistence and outbreaks on the short grass steppe in Colorado" to the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics.

Research Scientist Brad Johnson gave an invited talk entitled Functional Assessment of Colorado Wetlands: The Scientific and Programmatic Context at last week's State of Colorado Winter Environmental Conference.

A new publication from the Pilon/Smits groups, in collaboration with Professor Paul Kugrens and Steve Herbert (UW) will come out shortly in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA. It is entitled: "Chloroplast Iron-Sulfur Cluster Protein Maturation Requires the Essential Cysteine Desulfurase CpNifS". Graduate student Douglas Van Hoewyk is first author, with coauthorships from graduate student Chris Cohu, postdoc Salah Abdel-Ghany, and PIs Rien Pilon and Lianne Pilon-Smits.

Long-term ecological research being carried out by Professor Alan Knapp and colleagues at the Konza Prairie in NE Kansas was recently featured by the USDA National Research Initiative program. The study manipulates amounts and timing of rainfall to mimic expected changes in climate, and examines how the tall grass ecosystem is expected to respond.
