I'm interested in how evolution shapes life histories, and in turn how life histories shape the course of evolution. Major developmental transitions, eg from juvenile to reproductive adult, are relatively brief in duration but their success is paramount to survival and reproduction. I'm exploring a mechanism by which these "critical periods" might evolve by characterizing temporal variation in brain extracellular matrix between several animal taxa. A small class of ECM components has been strongly correlated to critical period closure in a variety of mammalian and avian systems, but its origin and role in other major animal clades remains undescribed.
