In nature, plants are continuously subjected to environmental stresses such as drought, heat, and salinity both individually or in combination. To cope with these stresses, plants have evolved array of molecular reprograming events to sense these changes rapidly and adapt accordingly. Understanding these reprograming events would be highly useful and could be exploited to help engineering plants that are capable of growing well under adverse environmental conditions. These reprograming events include chromatin re-modeling, pre-mRNA splicing and small non-coding microRNAs. We use high-throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies (RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, DNAseI-seq) in combination with, molecular, biochemical and genetic techniques to accomplish our research goals. Analysis of NGS data is done in collaboration with Asa Ben-Hur’s team in the Department of computer science at Colorado State University.
