Research by Asst. Prof. Joe von Fischer was included in the book Flood Cycle: Notes from a Changing Planet (2009) by the British artist and writer John Kelly. Kelly observed von Fischer measuring methane emissions from the Arctic tundra, and described the experience: "As I stand looking at the screen, I am aware of the breathing rate of the earth."
