Dr. Joe von Fischer has worked for years perfecting the use of lasers to detect methane emanating from soil microbes that silently do their work underground. His work has been funded by the Environmental Defense Fund, and has included placing detectors on Google Street View cars as they traverse the country. The upshot is finding leaks in municipal pipelines, and has prompted New Jersey’s largest natural gas utility, Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G), to invest heavily in reducing methane leaks from their system.
