Dr. LeRoy Poff, worldwide expert on aquatic ecology, wrote a perspective on how to manage stream flows below dams to promote biodiversity and ecosystem health.  The article is in the Sept. 9, 2016 edition of the journal SCIENCE.   Thousands of rivers and streams worldwide have dams greater than 4m in height, most that produce sustainable energy through hydropower.  Managing the ebbs and flows of these regulated streams can dramatically alter the abundance and diversity up and down the stream food webs, an ecological sustainability that should be added to the picture.
