Description:The last seminar of the fall season is almost here! Join us on
Tuesday\, December 3rd at 4pm in Biology 136 for the last talk before the
winter break. We are thankful to the CSU Department of Fish\, Wildlife\, &
amp\; Conservation Biology for letting us borrow Dr. Lise Aubry for the af
ternoon. Save the date and be sure to stop by in support of the last fall
seminar speaker! Snacks and drinks will be provided.\nAbstract\n\"Populati
ons of American black bears (Ursus americanus) have increased rapidly in t
he northeastern US\, more than any other black bear population across the
species’ range. New Jersey\, where our study takes place\, currently sus
tains the highest coupled density of black bears and humans on the contine
nt. The region offers a gradient of landscapes and resources\, from acorns
within mature forests\, to abundant anthropogenic food subsidies such as
trash in (sub)urban areas and corn from crops. We will examine how this he
terogenous landscape shapes individual fitness and black bear population d
ynamics using more than 25 years of demographic data. We will further disc
uss how our findings may help guide black bear management in the large reg
ion and promote coexistence between bear and humans.\"\n\nSee below for mo
re details and visit our website for more information on our seminars.\n\n
