Additional Information

The Department of Biology is pleased to host Dr. Marcelo Melo, Assistant Professor at Colorado State University, for an upcoming seminar.

Title: Proteins Under Stress: How Mechanics Affects Catalysis and Binding
Speaker: Dr. Marcelo Melo, Assistant Professor, CSU
Date: Tuesday, September 9, 2025
Time: 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Location: Biology Building, Room 136

This seminar will explore how mechanical forces influence protein function, with implications for catalysis and molecular binding. All faculty, students, and staff are welcome to attend.

Abstract:
Proteins perform their functions under the influence of a variety of external forces, from metabolic enzymes in the crowded cellular environment to cell adhesion complexes in motility and morphogenesis. However, essential features of their activity and regulation still elude us. In our laboratory, we work at the intersection of computational biochemistry and data science to develop tools that characterize protein dynamics at atomic resolution, revealing the essential dynamic features that regulate their function and interactions, and paving the way for a broader understanding of diverse biochemical processes.
