In this talk, I use examples from biology to argue against various attempts to justify idealizations by showing that they are harmless distortions of irrelevant features. In response, I argue that idealized models ought to be characterized as holistically (i.e., pervasively) distorted representations. I then suggest that the use of biological models can be justified by universality.
