I am broadly interested in ecological networks and their application in the study of both food webs and the spread of disease. In both of these contexts, I am interested in developing mechanistic models that capture the forces underlying network processes (e.g. feeding interactions in a food web, or infectious contacts in an epidemic) and their influence on ecological dynamics. In my research on food webs, I am working to use patterns of fish body size as a way to model who eats who in marine ecosystems and the potential consequences for fisheries management. This parallels my work on disease dynamics, where I am working to use economic indicators as a means of understanding the structure of human movement networks and their influence on the spread of dengue fever in several Brazilian cities.
