My interests center on the ecological significance of plant form and structure. Topics of study in my laboratory include the following: patterns of shoot development, branching, and leaf placement in different environments; modular and clonal growth; and the conservation and population biology of rare plants. Our studies often involve field work on natural populations combined with laboratory investigations. In general, we attempt to answer questions concerning the functional significance of form by integrating the fields of morphology, physiology, population biology, and evolutionary ecology.
